Does your car continue trying to move forward after you’ve put it into park? You may have a transmission issue that needs to be addressed. Here’s what you should know, from the experts at South Mountain Collision & Auto Center in Middletown, MD.

A certain amount of movement after you’ve shifted into park is normal; there’s a mechanism called a “parking pawl” in the transmission that is meant to stop the car from moving forward after it engages. If your car simply moves forward a couple of inches and then stops, your transmission is in good working order.

However, if your transmission fails to engage park at all, or catches then bumps forward again before finally catching, you have an issue that needs to be addressed. If the mechanism becomes damaged, often you’ll hear a clunking sound or feel the transmission try and fail to catch after you’ve engaged park. If the issue goes unaddressed, eventually you risk parking failure altogether, meaning it’s possible that your car will roll away while parked one day.

If you’re having parking issues or any other transmission problems, our professional technicians have you covered. For the best transmission service and repair shop in Middletown, MD, call or stop by South Mountain Collision & Auto Center today.
